Context¶
As the Loryth project approaches full feature implementation and increased user adoption, performance optimization becomes essential. While the system currently meets basic performance needs, targeted optimization will be necessary to handle increased load, improve user experience, and ensure efficient resource utilization.
Proactive performance optimization will prevent future bottlenecks, improve user satisfaction, reduce infrastructure costs, and ensure the system can scale effectively as usage grows.
Proposal¶
Overview¶
Implement comprehensive performance optimizations across all services, including database query optimization, strategic caching implementation, connection pooling configuration, and critical path profiling and optimization.
Goals¶
- Optimize database queries for improved response times
- Implement caching strategies for frequently accessed data
- Configure and optimize database connection pooling
- Profile and optimize critical code paths
- Reduce resource utilization while maintaining functionality
- Improve overall system responsiveness and throughput
Non-Goals¶
- Complete system rewrite for performance
- Premature optimization of non-critical paths
- Hardware or infrastructure upgrades beyond normal scaling
- Performance optimizations that significantly increase code complexity
- Optimization of features still under active development
Technical Details¶
Approach¶
Database Query Optimization¶
- Profile and identify slow queries across all services
- Optimize database schema and indexing:
- Add missing indexes based on query patterns
- Optimize existing indexes (covering indexes, etc.)
- Review and refine table structures
- Implement query improvements:
- Rewrite inefficient queries
- Add query hints where appropriate
- Optimize join operations
- Implement pagination for large result sets
- Set up query monitoring and alerting
Caching Implementation¶
- Implement a multi-level caching strategy based on ADR-0006:
- Application-level caching for computed results
- Distributed cache (Redis) for shared data
- Database query caching where appropriate
- Define appropriate cache invalidation strategies:
- Time-based expiration
- Event-based invalidation
- Version-tagged cache entries
- Implement cache warming for critical data
Connection Pooling Configuration¶
- Optimize database connection pooling:
- Right-size connection pools based on load
- Configure connection timeouts
- Implement health checks and validation
- Add connection pooling for other resources:
- HTTP client connection pooling
- Message broker connections
- External API client pooling
- Implement circuit breakers to prevent resource exhaustion
Critical Path Profiling and Optimization¶
- Identify and profile critical user paths:
- High-frequency operations
- User-facing workflows
- Resource-intensive operations
- Optimize code execution:
- Reduce algorithmic complexity
- Minimize memory allocations
- Implement async operations where appropriate
- Optimize serialization/deserialization
- Implement performance testing and benchmarking
Dependencies¶
- Completion of core services from previous quarters
- Implementation of data persistence strategy (ADR-0006)
- Access to production-like data volumes for testing
Backwards Compatibility¶
- Performance optimizations should not change API behavior
- Query optimizations must maintain data consistency
- Caching implementations must ensure data correctness
- All optimizations will be tested for regression issues

Alternatives Considered¶
-
Hardware Scaling Instead of Optimization
- Description: Scale hardware resources instead of optimizing code
- Pros:
- Faster implementation
- No code changes required
- Predictable results
- Cons:
- Higher ongoing infrastructure costs
- Doesn't address fundamental inefficiencies
- Limited scalability for some bottlenecks
- Why not chosen: Not cost-effective long-term and doesn't address root causes
-
Complete Service Rewrites
- Description: Rewrite underperforming services from scratch
- Pros:
- Opportunity to apply all lessons learned
- Clean implementation without legacy constraints
- Potentially significant performance improvements
- Cons:
- High development cost
- Potential for new bugs and issues
- Extended timeline for improvements
- Why not chosen: Too disruptive and risky compared to targeted optimization
Open Questions¶
- What are appropriate cache time-to-live values for different data types?
- Should we implement read replicas for database scaling?
- What is the appropriate balance between caching and real-time data for critical operations?
