Context

The Loryth project vision emphasizes a "Community-Driven" development approach where users and developers actively engage in the evolution of the platform. The vision document states that success criteria include "A vibrant ecosystem of plugins extends core functionality to address diverse needs" and "The community contributes to and benefits from the open-source nature of the project."

While the technical foundation for plugins is being established in Release 0.2.5, there is currently no infrastructure planned to support community development, collaboration, and plugin distribution. Without these capabilities, the project risks failing to build the vibrant ecosystem essential to its success.

This roadmap item addresses the need for community infrastructure to enable collaboration, plugin distribution, and knowledge sharing among developers and users.

Proposal

Overview

Develop a comprehensive community infrastructure that facilitates collaboration, plugin discovery, distribution, and knowledge sharing. This includes creating a plugin marketplace, developer portal, contribution guidelines, and community engagement tools to foster a vibrant ecosystem around the Loryth platform.

Goals

  • Create a plugin marketplace for discovery and distribution
  • Develop a developer portal with comprehensive documentation and resources
  • Establish contribution guidelines and governance processes
  • Implement tools for community feedback and feature requests
  • Build analytics for understanding ecosystem health and trends
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative community environment

Non-Goals

  • Monetization infrastructure for plugins (may be considered in future releases)
  • Complex plugin dependency resolution (handled at plugin installation time)
  • Social network features beyond project collaboration
  • Centralized user account system (maintaining self-hosting philosophy)

Technical Details

Approach

  • Implement a decentralized plugin repository architecture
  • Create a web-based developer portal with documentation and resources
  • Develop plugin publication and verification workflows
  • Build user-friendly interfaces for plugin discovery and management
  • Implement feedback mechanisms and community voting systems

Dependencies

  • Requires Plugin System Foundation (Release 0.2.5)
  • Depends on Security Implementation (Release 0.3)
  • Will influence Self-hosting Framework (Release 0.4.5)

Backwards Compatibility

  • Initial implementation with no backward compatibility concerns
  • Will establish standards for future marketplace API changes
  • Plugin manifest will include distribution metadata

Implementation Plan

Phase 1: Plugin Repository

  • Design plugin repository architecture
  • Implement plugin metadata specification
  • Develop plugin submission and validation process
  • Create plugin versioning and update mechanisms
  • Build plugin search and discovery features

Phase 2: Developer Portal

  • Design developer portal architecture
  • Implement comprehensive documentation system
  • Create developer registration and profile management
  • Build plugin development and submission workflows
  • Develop interactive tutorials and examples

Phase 3: Community Tools

  • Implement feature request and voting system
  • Create plugin ratings and reviews functionality
  • Develop community discussion forums
  • Build contribution tracking and recognition system
  • Create ecosystem analytics dashboard

Phase 4: Integration and Launch

  • Integrate with plugin management in client applications
  • Develop content moderation tools and processes
  • Create community guidelines and governance documentation
  • Build onboarding experiences for new community members
  • Conduct beta testing with early adopters

Community Impact

For Contributors

  • Provides clear pathways for contribution
  • Offers recognition for community contributions
  • Establishes standards for plugin development and distribution
  • Creates opportunities for collaboration

For Users

  • Enables discovery of plugins that extend platform functionality
  • Provides mechanisms for feedback and feature requests
  • Creates a trusted source for verified plugins
  • Builds community knowledge base and support resources

Alternatives Considered

  1. Centralized plugin marketplace
  2. Description: Build a traditional centralized marketplace for plugin distribution
  3. Pros:
    • Simpler implementation and management
    • Consistent user experience
    • Easier quality control and security verification
  4. Cons:
    • Creates a single point of failure
    • Conflicts with self-hosting philosophy
    • Potential privacy concerns with centralized data
  5. Why not chosen: Contradicts core principles of user autonomy and decentralization

  6. GitHub-only distribution

  7. Description: Rely solely on GitHub for plugin distribution and community management
  8. Pros:
    • Leverages existing platform infrastructure
    • Familiar to many developers
    • No need to build custom systems
  9. Cons:
    • Limited discovery capabilities for non-technical users
    • Dependency on third-party platform
    • Less integrated user experience
  10. Why not chosen: Creates barriers for non-technical users and limits control over experience

  11. No formal marketplace

  12. Description: Allow ad-hoc plugin distribution without central infrastructure
  13. Pros:
    • Maximum freedom for developers
    • No maintenance burden for project team
    • Fully decentralized approach
  14. Cons:
    • Poor discovery experience
    • Security and trust challenges
    • Fragmented community
  15. Why not chosen: Would severely limit ecosystem growth and user experience

Open Questions

  • How can we balance decentralization with quality control and security?
  • What governance model should be adopted for the plugin marketplace?
  • How should plugin ratings and popularity metrics be calculated?
  • What metrics should be tracked to measure ecosystem health?
  • How can we ensure accessibility for both technical and non-technical users?
