๐งญ 1. Summary¶
This technical design addresses test quality issues in the loryth.common.reflection module by removing problematic try-except blocks and replacing manual error checking with proper pytest assertions. The changes will improve test reliability, clarity, and maintainability while ensuring that tests properly validate expected behaviors rather than masking potential issues.
At a glance:
- Remove try-except blocks with pass statements that may hide real issues
- Replace manual exception flag tracking with pytest.raises()
- Standardize assertion patterns for consistency and clarity
- Process files in priority order: unit โ integration โ regression
๐ 2. Context and Problem Statement¶
The current reflection module test suite contains several anti-patterns that reduce test quality and reliability:
- Try-except blocks with pass statements that may hide legitimate failures
- Manual exception flag tracking using boolean variables instead of pytest's built-in exception testing
- Inconsistent assertion patterns that make tests harder to read and maintain
These patterns were identified during analysis of the test suite reorganization (TD-006) and represent technical debt that should be addressed to maintain high code quality standards.
2.1 Goals¶
- Eliminate problematic try-except patterns that may mask test failures or unexpected behaviors
- Standardize exception testing using pytest.raises() with appropriate match patterns
- Improve assertion clarity by using consistent, static comparison patterns
- Maintain test coverage while improving test reliability and readability
2.2 Non-Goals (Out of Scope)¶
- Test organization improvements (already addressed in TD-006)
- Performance optimization of test execution
- Adding new test cases or expanding test coverage
- Changes to test infrastructure or tooling
- Automated linting rules to prevent regression
2.3 Assumptions and Constraints¶
- Tests must continue to pass after refactoring (or be marked as xfail if they reveal real issues)
- Changes should not affect the public API or behavior of the reflection module
- Refactoring will be done file-by-file to allow for careful review and validation
- Python 3.13 and pytest conventions apply throughout
๐งฉ 3. Design Overview¶
The improvement process involves systematic refactoring of test files in the reflection module, focusing on three main areas: exception handling, assertion patterns, and test clarity. Each file will be processed individually to ensure changes are isolated and reviewable.
3.1 Facades at a Glance¶
| Component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Exception Pattern Refactoring | Replace try-except blocks with pytest.raises() or proper assertions |
| Assertion Standardization | Convert verbose/dynamic assertions to clear static ones |
| Test Validation | Ensure refactored tests maintain coverage and reveal real issues |
3.2 Removed/Changed Interfaces (Before โ After)¶
| Area | Before (removed/changed) | After (use instead) |
|---|---|---|
| Exception Testing | try: ... except: pass | Remove or convert to pytest.raises() |
| Exception Flags | raised = False; try: ... except: raised = True; assert raised is True | with pytest.raises(ExceptionType): |
| Boolean Assertions | assert condition is True | assert condition |
| Collection Checks | len(collection) == 0 preferred | No change (current pattern is preferred) |
3.3 Removal/Deprecation Policy¶
- Changes will be made incrementally, file-by-file
- Tests that fail after removing problematic try-except blocks will be marked with
@pytest.mark.xfail - No deprecation period needed as these are internal test improvements
๐ 4. Detailed API Surface¶
4.1 Exception Testing Patterns¶
Before:
try:
result = some_operation()
assert result is None
except Exception:
pass # Either outcome is acceptable
After - Remove if masking issues:
@pytest.mark.xfail(reason="Behavior needs clarification")
def test_operation_behavior():
result = some_operation()
assert result is None
After - Convert to explicit test:
with pytest.raises(SpecificException, match="expected error pattern"):
some_operation()
4.2 Manual Exception Flag Tracking¶
Before:
raised = False
try:
operation_that_should_fail()
except SpecificException:
raised = True
assert raised is True
After:
with pytest.raises(SpecificException, match="expected error message"):
operation_that_should_fail()
4.3 Assertion Standardization¶
Before:
assert condition is True
assert condition is False
assert value != None
assert len(results) > 0 # when checking for non-empty
After:
assert condition
assert not condition
assert value is not None
assert len(results) >= 1 # or assert len(results) == expected_count
โ๏ธ 5. Semantics¶
- Exception matching: Include message patterns only when error messages are predictable and stable
- Static assertions: Prefer exact comparisons (
==,!=) over range comparisons (>,<) unless the range is semantically meaningful - File processing order: Unit tests first, then integration, then regression tests
- Failure handling: Tests that reveal real issues after refactoring should be marked as xfail for future investigation
๐งช 6. Examples (concise)¶
Exception Testing Improvement¶
# Before: Masking potential issues
def test_import_resolution_handles_missing_module():
try:
module_info = resolver.resolve_module("nonexistent_module")
assert module_info is None
except Exception:
pass # Either outcome acceptable
# After: Clear expectation
def test_import_resolution_returns_none_for_missing_module():
module_info = resolver.resolve_module("nonexistent_module")
assert module_info is None
# Or if the behavior is actually undefined:
@pytest.mark.xfail(reason="Module resolution behavior for missing modules needs specification")
def test_import_resolution_missing_module():
resolver.resolve_module("nonexistent_module")
Exception Flag Elimination¶
# Before: Manual flag tracking
def test_provider_selection_error():
raised = False
try:
provider.for_type(unsupported_type)
except ProviderSelectionError:
raised = True
assert raised is True
# After: Direct pytest usage
def test_provider_selection_error():
with pytest.raises(ProviderSelectionError):
provider.for_type(unsupported_type)
โ 7. Acceptance Criteria¶
- All try-except blocks with pass statements in reflection tests are either removed or converted to proper assertions
- All manual exception flag tracking patterns are replaced with pytest.raises()
- Assertion patterns follow the standardized format (static comparisons, clear boolean checks)
- Tests that fail after refactoring are properly marked as xfail with descriptive reasons
- All existing test coverage is maintained or improved
- File processing follows the specified order: unit โ integration โ regression
๐ 8. Rollout and Migration¶
The rollout will proceed file-by-file through the reflection test suite:
- Phase 1: Unit tests (
tests/unit/reflection/) - Phase 2: Integration tests (
tests/integration/reflection/) - Phase 3: Regression tests (
tests/regression/reflection/)
Each file will be: - Analyzed for the target patterns - Refactored according to the established guidelines - Validated to ensure tests still pass or are appropriately marked as xfail - Reviewed before proceeding to the next file
โ ๏ธ 9. Risks and Mitigations¶
Risk: Removing try-except blocks may reveal previously hidden test failures - Mitigation: Mark failing tests as xfail with clear reasons for future investigation
Risk: Over-aggressive refactoring may change test semantics unintentionally - Mitigation: File-by-file approach with careful review of each change
Risk: Tests may become overly strict and brittle - Mitigation: Focus on predictable behaviors; use message matching only when error messages are stable

๐ 11. Identified Issues for Future Work¶
During the test quality improvements, several tests were marked as xfail due to behavioral mismatches between expected and actual implementation behavior. These represent legitimate issues that should be addressed in future work:
| Test File | Test Function | Issue Description | Phase |
|---|---|---|---|
test_import_resolution.py | test_import_resolver_handles_missing_modules | Resolver raises ResolutionError instead of returning None for missing modules | Unit |
test_import_resolution.py | test_resolve_dotted_path_handles_missing_attributes | Resolver raises ResolutionError instead of returning None for missing attributes | Unit |
Note: These xfailed tests reveal actual behavioral inconsistencies between the documented/expected API behavior and the current implementation. They should be addressed through either: 1. Updating the implementation to match the expected behavior (graceful None returns) 2. Updating the test expectations to match the actual behavior (exception throwing) 3. Clarifying the API specification to define the correct behavior
The remaining xfailed tests in the test suite (6 total across all phases) were pre-existing and represent planned features or edge cases that are intentionally not yet implemented.

๐ 13. Glossary¶
xfail: pytest marker indicating a test is expected to fail, used for tests that reveal issues requiring future investigation
Static assertion: Test assertion using exact comparisons (==, is) rather than dynamic ranges, providing predictable and clear test outcomes
Exception flag tracking: Anti-pattern where tests manually track whether exceptions occurred using boolean variables instead of using pytest's built-in exception testing capabilities
