Tracking Phase 8 of DI Roadmap
Related 001-dependency-injection-roadmap.md

๐Ÿงญ 1. Summary

This technical design implements Phase 8 of the DI roadmap by establishing the DI system as a client of the reflection system with global integration and performance optimization. The design creates a global ReflectionContext, thread-safe provider management, and comprehensive performance monitoring.

At a glance:

  • DI system integrates as a client of the reflection system
  • Global ReflectionContext with thread-safe provider extensibility
  • Performance optimization for startup time and memory usage
  • Comprehensive metrics integration for DI resolution and reflection usage
  • Thread-safe global state management with provider registration

๐Ÿ“š 2. Context and Problem Statement

The DI system has been built through Phases 1-7 but operates independently of the global reflection system:

Current Integration Issues

  1. Isolated Reflection Usage - DI creates its own reflection contexts instead of using global instance
  2. No Provider Extensibility - DI cannot benefit from custom reflection providers registered globally
  3. Performance Inefficiency - Multiple reflection contexts create redundant caching and processing
  4. Missing Global State - No centralized reflection configuration affects all systems
  5. Limited Observability - No comprehensive metrics for DI and reflection integration

Integration Goals

2.1 Goals

  1. Global Integration - DI uses global reflection instance for all reflection needs
  2. Provider Extensibility - Support custom providers registered globally
  3. Thread-Safe Management - Safe concurrent access to global reflection state
  4. Performance Optimization - Optimize startup time, memory usage, and resolution speed
  5. Comprehensive Observability - Metrics for DI resolution, reflection usage, and performance

2.2 Non-Goals (Out of Scope)

  • Rewriting existing DI functionality (integration only)
  • Changing reflection system architecture fundamentally
  • Breaking backward compatibility for DI or reflection APIs
  • Adding new DI features beyond integration

2.3 Assumptions and Constraints

  • Phase 1-7 DI implementation is complete
  • Reflection system supports global instance and provider registration
  • Integration must not impact performance negatively
  • Thread safety is critical for production use

๐Ÿงฉ 3. Design Overview

The integration establishes DI as a client of the global reflection system while optimizing performance and providing comprehensive observability.

๐Ÿ“ 4. Implementation Details

Update โ€” 2025-10-23: ReflectionContextBuilder has been removed in favour of constructing ReflectionContext directly with optional TypeHintConfig/metrics parameters. The following subsections now reflect the constructor-only integration pattern.

4.1 Global Reflection Integration

Reflection now exposes a constructor-owned singleton instead of a mutable builder. The module-level instance is created once, and callers that need different cache, metrics, or strictness settings construct a bespoke context explicitly.

# src/loryth/common/reflection/__init__.py

from loryth.common.collections import HierarchicalCache

from .metrics import ReflectionMetrics
from .reflection_context import ReflectionContext, TypeHintConfig

# Default singleton used across the runtime
reflection: ReflectionContext = ReflectionContext()

def build_reflection_context(
    *,
    cache: HierarchicalCache | None = None,
    metrics: ReflectionMetrics | None = None,
    type_hint_config: TypeHintConfig | None = None,
) -> ReflectionContext:
    """Create a context with explicit cache/metrics overrides when tests need control."""
    return ReflectionContext(
        cache=cache,
        metrics=metrics,
        type_hint_config=type_hint_config,
    )

This pattern keeps the hot path allocation-free while still providing an escape hatch for specialised scenarios. Instead of mutating a shared builder or swapping providers at runtime, each subsystem injects the context instance it needsโ€”either the default reflection singleton or a purpose-built context returned by build_reflection_context.

  • Single Reflection Instance: All DI operations use the global reflection context
  • Provider Extensibility: Custom providers registered globally affect DI operations
  • Thread Safety: All global state access is protected by appropriate locking
  • Backward Compatibility: Existing DI APIs remain unchanged

5.2 Performance Optimization

  • Startup Optimization: Minimize bootstrap time through caching and optimization
  • Memory Management: Monitor and control memory usage with cleanup strategies
  • Resolution Performance: Optimize service resolution paths and dependency analysis
  • Metrics Collection: Comprehensive observability without significant overhead

5.3 Integration Points

  • Dependency Analysis: Uses global reflection for constructor and type analysis
  • Type Validation: Uses global reflection for service compatibility checking

container = DiContainer()
container._memory_manager.start_monitoring()

# Register many services
for i in range(1000):
    container.register_transient(f"Service{i}", SomeService)

# Check memory usage
memory_metrics = container._memory_manager.get_memory_metrics()
print(f"Container memory: {memory_metrics.container_memory_mb:.1f}MB")
print(f"Cache size: {memory_metrics.cache_size_bytes / 1024:.1f}KB")
